The Sq. D DC disconnect switch required by UL on any PV system…Is this true and need some help with some industry clarification on this topic.

I heard a few rumors that we can not use the Sq. D disco H364AWK in a PV system to disconnect 3 poles??? (H364NAWK: Safety Switch , 200A, 600VAC/VDC, Fusible, Heavy Duty, 3-Pole Enclosure Rating: NEMA 3R/12 & Factory Installed Neutral Yes)

Is this correct??? Also just used H465AWK 4 pole fused and no one said I could not...Its rated at 600VDC 400 Amps per Sq.D

Is there any link that someone can send me to download the info. if so thank you.

Also just took a look at new Eaton Cutler-Hammer disconnect switch for solar/PV, fusible and non. The only problem is that they decided to go with a single pole??? 3 pole with a jumper for 1-pole device capable of switching 1-600vDC circuit!! Why would they do this over a 3 or 4 pole and does it have something to do with UL or the disco question above.

Many thanks and hope we all have prosperous New Year

Not a UL requirement. Sounds like an AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) requirement. They will tell you what is permissible for use in their jurisdictions. Be aware, the requirements can vary and usually do from one jurisdiction to another.

As for the question concerning Eaton Cutler-Hammer device, it’s always best to contact the manufacturer of the device. They would be the best source of information to provide you with the answers that you seek.

You are correct in all you have said. At this time, May10, there isn't any Sq D disco that is UL listed that is permitted to be used to disconnect 3 circuits at one time.

The only way that one can fully meet the code at this time is just as Eaton has described in their PV disco literature - 1 circuit per disconnect, run through two poles that have been jumpered. Further, those poles must be the two outside ones.

Also, especially with the upcoming code change that will require all combiners to have a disconnect in them because no product is load-rated to permit the removal of a fuse while hot, the Eaton disconnect is the only one that can meet 690.16 for multiple circuits as well.

I do not work for Eaton, but run an engineering firm that specializes in PV design.
